Woodlands Cultural Olympiad 1

Date: 3rd Aug 2016 @ 7:00am

With the Rio Olympics starting this coming Friday, children at Woodland's holiday club have been making their own way to Rio, all be it the long way round!! Starting in Ancient Greece last Monday, we have already visited France, the US, the UK, Sweden, Belgium and the Netherlands and are looking forward to stopping off in Germany before heading to Finland, Australia, Italy and Japan next week!! Whilst in each country we have tried a number of native and traditional crafts and have thoroughly enjoyed the varied actvities on offer - Belgian truffles being one of the most popular activities so far (for obvious reasons!!)

Pictures will be available to view in our gallery but, in the meantime, here are a few photots to let you see what we have been up to so far ...

On Monday we went back to Ancient Greece and the origins of the Olympics as we created an olympic torch, some olympic ring based arts and crafts and a traditional olive wreath crown.

We then stopped off in France on Tuesay and created our very own version of the Eiffel Tower, some Notre Dame gargoyles and several mosaic Tricolor Flags.

On Wednesday we went to the US, created some beautiful sporting fabric art, American celebration hats and some St Louis placemats.

On Thursday we were back in the UK for an English tea party with Union Jack inspired cupcakes before finally ending the week in Sweden where we painted some beautiful Dala horses.

We started week 2 with a trip to Belgium where we made some scrummy Belgian truffles and coloured in some traditional stained glass windows.

Tuesday saw us back in France where we painted the Eiffel Tower, crafted some beautiful French snails and tried our hand at french knitting.

Our most recent stop has been in the Netherlands where we have been stitching some blue delft cross stitch pictures, constructing windmills and finally producing some beautiful 'Tulips from Amsterdam' arts and crafts.

With just the US and Germany to visit before the end of the week we look forward to another week of culture and creativity next week as we return to the UK before visiting Finland, Australia, Italy and Japan.

Alongside our Olympic based arts and crafts, children have spent a lot of time engaging in free play whilst making new friends from other classes and schools in the local area.  They have also enjoyed a variety of sporting actvities such as pool, table tennis, football and dance, heading indoors to spend time in the ICT suite, watch a film or play on the Xbox when the weather has taken a turn for the worst. Fingers crossed that the sun shines on us next week so we can continue to stay active and enjoy some more fun sporting activities with one of our sport's coaches.
